To succeed as a team, you must act like a team.

This is the expectation for each member of the team.

When the members of the team care more about the team then themselves, each member will achieve greater things as a result.  The qualities listed below are specific ways to develop into a quality teammate.  Click each quality to find out to see specific examples of actions that portray each quality.

This guide was created by using The 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player, written by John C. Maxwell, as a starting point.  Each of the 17 have been paraphrased below and applied directly to wrestling.

Adaptable

You must be willing to change for the team.

 

Collaborative

Cooperation is working in the same room. Collaboration is bringing something to the table that helps everyone.

 

Committed

Commitment is getting it done no matter what.  It is not an emotion.

 

Communicative

Without communication, you don’t have a team; you have a group of individuals.

 

Competent

Very capable and highly qualified. You know how to wrestle and have proven it.

 

Dependable

You do the right thing for the team regardless of moods, conflicts, or environment.

 

Disciplined

Doing what you don’t want to do now so you can do great things later.

 

Enlarging

Being responsible for raising your teammates’ ability to another level.

 

Enthusiastic

A high level of energy that is obvious to those around you.

 

Intentional

Everything you do is on purpose and you know why you are doing it.

 

Mission-Conscious

You are aware of exactly what the team wants to accomplish.

 

Prepared

You have done everything required for you to get it done when the time comes.

 

Relational

Solid relationships hold teams together through adversity.

 

Self-Improving

Always improving regardless of past achievement. Your best can always get better.

 

Selfless

Putting others on the team ahead of themselves.

 

Solution Oriented

Thinking in terms of solutions rather than focusing on problems.

 

Tenacious

Action that results from elevated desire.
